Best Way to Clean Weed Pipes – HØJ

Cleaning Methods to Use

There are many different cleaning methods you can use when it comes to your pipe. However, there is one main way that it can be done.

Scrape Out as Much as Possible

The first step to cleaning a pipe is to try to scrape out and remove as much resin and buildup as possible. This will help to make cleaning it much easier. You can use a pipe scraper or even cut off a cotton swab top and use its tough stick to help scrape the resin off. You’ll want to focus on this step for a bit to ensure you get as much buildup out of your pipe as well. This way, the next steps will go by faster.

Soak it in Water

While not always necessary it’s still a good idea to let the pipe soak in some hot water. This will allow it to remove bacteria and germs that might be missed by a cleaning solution. Make sure the water is hot though or the germs won’t be destroyed. Cold water will help to loosen up particles in the pipe, but it won’t remove the bacteria that might be hiding around in it. Because of this, extremely hot water is important to use for soaking.

Put Some Cleaning Solution and Salt Into It

After soaking it in water, try to put some cleaning solution into the pipe to help break up the resin and germs in it even more. Salt is also very helpful when it comes to absorbing the chemicals in the solution so they don’t get left behind. Just pour a tad bit of cleaning solution into your pipe and about a tablespoon of salt into it to help.

After doing this plug any opening on the pipe up to prevent the liquid from escaping. After doing so, shake the pipe up gently so the cleaning solution gets into all the crevices.

Wash it Out

Once you shake the pipe gently to clean it you’ll then want to pour the cleaner out and rinse it with warm water. Keep doing this until all traces of the cleaning solution and salt have been removed. This might take a few minutes to do but it’s important to ensure all traces of the cleaning liquid are gone.

Ideally, use warm to help remove the cleaner. Warm water will help to destroy any leftover bacteria and dissolve residue that might have been missed.

Let it Air Dry

After rinsing your pipe out, dry it off carefully with a clean towel or paper towel. You then can let it rest in a clean area to air dry. Air drying is ideal to help the interior of the pipe dry so you don’t somehow end up damaging this delicate product when trying to dry it.

Once you let it air dry for a bit, you can then take a clean cloth and gently pat it over your pipe. This can help to dry any areas that might still be a little wet. Make sure to be very careful when doing this step though as being too rough could damage your smoking pipe.

The Denture Tablet Method

If you’re not keen on the idea of using a cleaning solution you can instead try the denture tablet method. This is a simple method to use when it comes to cleaning out pipes, but doesn’t always give the most intricate clean.

Fill a Clean Container with Warm Water

You’ll want to first find a clean container to keep your pipe in and fill it with warm water. Make sure the container is full, but not all the way filled to the top.

Put Your Pipe Into the Water and Drop a Few Denture Tablets Into It

After filling the container with water, take your pipe and gently drop it into it. Then, take about 2 denture tablets and put them into the water. Once you do so you’ll see these tablets instantly dissolve and get to work removing buildup on the pipe.

Let it Sit for a Few Minutes

After you put the tablets into the water let it sit for a few minutes to ensure the tablets work to remove as much buildup as possible. It’s a good idea to wait about 10-15 minutes for this. Once the time is up, carefully take your pipe out the water.

Once you remove the pipe from the water try to shake off as much of the excess water as possible. This can not only help to prevent you from making a mess, but will work to remove any extra water inside the pipe that could otherwise make it difficult for it to dry.

Dry the Pipe Off

After removing the pipe from the water, take a clean cloth and wipe it off. Just like with the other cleaning method mentioned above, it’s best to let the pipe air dry for a bit to prevent accidentally damaging it when drying it off. This should take about an hour or so for the pipe to fully dry.

If you’re more of a DIY pipe cleaner person, you’ve got options, too! One of the best, easiest and most basic ways to clean your metal or ceramic weed pipe to maximize your experience is to:

1) Fill a plastic bag with 1 tsp of salt and some 91% isopropyl alcohol.

2) Submerge your pot pipe in the salt and alcohol and let it sit to soak, then shake the baggie, swishing the solution around.

3) Afterwards you can a washcloth, rags or paper towels to wipe the oily resin off, and a nail to scrape the sides of your weed bowl and the pipe stem. It’s important to remove all the resin, because it has mixed with alcohol and would be toxic to smoke.

4) You should then use a little dish soap to wash away all resin and the alcohol completely. Some cannabis consumers like to boil their marijuana pipes in water and then clean them with alcohol and rags. Other tokers use nail polish remover, but you have to be sure to remove all traces of potentially hazardous cleaning chemicals by soaking chemically-treated pot pipes in dish soap and rinsing thoroughly.

What’s Your Smoking Equipment Made Of?

The method you choose to clean your pipe or bong will depend on the material of your smoking device. Bongs and pipes can be made from many different materials, so let’s take a closer look at what’s best for each type and how to clean your bong the right way.

Glass

Glass

Glass is a delicate material. The methods you choose to use on a glass pipe or bong will largely depend on the quality of your piece and the thickness of the glass. Because of this, we don’t recommend using boiling methods for glass pieces – you don’t want a beautiful bong or pipe shattering right before your eyes! Boiling a glass pipe might not be the best option, but there are also many other ways for safely cleaning glass pipes and bongs, like most alcoholic and non-alcoholic methods.

Silicone

Silicone is resilient. If you have a silicone pipe or bong, you’re in luck, because silicone pieces can handle pretty much anything you throw at them. They are heat-resistant, cold-resistant, and can withstand even the harshest of chemicals. Because of this, silicone pipes and bongs are the easiest to clean of all smoking devices.

MetalVIEW ALL

Metal

Metal is a very flexible substance that can withstand a multitude of chemicals, materials, and high heat. Similarly to cleaning glass pipes or bongs, both alcohol and non-alcohol methods are safe to use with metal pieces. In addition, you can also use boiling water to clean metal pipes, whereas boiling glass pipes is not recommended. When using methods that require high heat, just be careful not to burn yourself on your own piece.

Wood

Wood

Bongs and pipes made out of wood are naturally very delicate pieces. Unlike when cleaning a glass pipe or bong, wooden bongs and pipes have a hard time handling high temperatures, so you’ll want to avoid using boiling water methods. Harsh chemicals like alcohol or heavy-duty cleaners can cause discoloration and sometimes even distaste. Stick to softer methods like vinegar and baking soda with wooden pieces.

Acryl

Acryl is a very sturdy type of plastic material that’s very common for cheaper bongs. However, because acryl is a type of plastic, you might be wondering how to clean a plastic bong without causing too much damage. You’ll want to avoid using harsh chemicals and high heat, as this can cause plastic to erode, creating an unsavory taste and potentially damaging your piece in the long run. Instead, we recommend using a vinegar and baking soda method or an alcohol and salt method with a lower alcohol content.

How to Clean a Bong or Water Pipe: Step-by-Step

  1. EMPTY AND DISASSEMBLE: Pour out any leftover bong water. Remove the bowl/downstem from the bong’s body. To clean the bowl and downstem, follow the same steps listed for the pipe deep clean up above.
  2. FILL THE BONG: Plug the base hole of the bong with cotton balls, and fill the chamber with isopropyl alcohol. Allow the alcohol to reach every nook, cranny, and stain, but be sure to not overfill. Then, toss in a handful of your finest coarse salt.
  1. SHAKE, SHAKE, & SIT: Reinforce your cotton ball blockade and plug the mouthpiece with paper towels or your palm, and vigorously shake. Just as with cleaning a pipe, this step may require a few repetitions, so you may expect to set the bong aside for a half hour or two before returning with newfound determination.
  1. BRUSH THE BONG: After the majority of the gunk and resin has been dislodged, dispose of the sullied alcohol mixture. If you’ve still got hard to reach stains inside the base of your bong, you can use an appropriately-sized bottle brush to scrub the leftover filth.
  1. RINSE & DRY: Fill the chamber with hot, soapy water and repeat step three. Once thoroughly shaken, rinsed, and shining, wipe down the outside of the bong. Time to pack a bowl and let pot clouds roll!

DIY Tips to Keep Your Bong Cleaner:

There are a couple simple, home remedies that help maintain and clean your bong. The first being: LEMONS! Aside from zesting up dishes and adding a kick to Applebee’s tap water, lemons are great for slowing the buildup of resin. So squeeze a couple drops of lemon juice into your bong, and see for yourself. Plus, you’ll get an added note of citrus in every inhale!

Other than that, the final best practice to keep your bong cleaner is to simply store your bong empty. Leftover bong water can contribute to bacteria growth, and that’s not the sort of chronic you want to welcome into your lungs.

How Often Should You Replace the Water in Bong?

Replacing the water in your bong will reduce the need to clean it regularly. If you smoke out of a bong at least once a day, you should also replace the water in your bong at least once a day. (Okay, okay…once a day is definitely sufficient.)

You’ll notice a change in flavor faster than the weed will hit your brain. Clean water, free of bacteria, mold, and other microorganisms floating around in bong water will bring out the flavors of your strain. If you don’t mind spreading germs around, at least think about the quality of your weed!

How To Clean Your Pipe With Boiling Water

Let’s keep things simple. If you just want to use water and heat to clean your pipe or a bong, you’ll be solid.

Grab a saucepan or a pot and fill it up with enough water to cover your pipe or the individual pieces of your bong. (If your pipe is exposed while in boiling water, it might crack.) Once the water’s boiling, pop in your piece and reduce the water to a simmer.

Leave it in for half an hour or so, checking on it every now and again to make sure the water is still covering the glass. Remove the pieces (carefully!) and poke out any excess ash with a pipe cleaner.

Step by Step How to Clean a Pipe with Acetone and Salt

  1. Wear Gloves: Again, nobody wants smelly fingers as a result of this process. Do yourself a favor and wear either dishwashing gloves or latex gloves throughout the process.
  2. Tape Shut one End: Using electrical tape, seal off one end of the pipe. Ensure there is a watertight seal in preparation for the next step.
  3. Add Kosher Salt: Sourcing kosher salt is essential. It is pure and, unlike table salt, doesn’t contain any unnecessary additives. You’ll only need to pour in roughly a teaspoon or so, depending on the size of your pipe.
  4. Add Acetone: Acetone is essentially nail polish remover. Many nail polish removers come scented or with color additives, so try to find 100 percent pure acetone. Fill the pipe with acetone, leaving a small bit of space before the top.
  5. Tape Shut and Shake: Seal the other end of the pipe with electrical tape. Again, ensure it is watertight because now it’s time to shake furiously. Depending on how built up the residue is in your pipe, you may need to shake for up to five to ten minutes.
  6. Rinse Clear: With the hottest water possible, remove the tape from both ends and rinse the entire glass pipe clear of whatever residue has shaken clear. Keep flushing until the salt and acetone are washed clean.
  7. Wipe Any Excess Grime Clean: Just like with the specialty cleaner, there may be some leftover grime, especially near the bowl. Don’t be afraid to pull out your pipe cleaner or rag to really dig into these leftover bits. They will wipe clean with a little bit of work.

Don’t Forget to Clean Your Pipe Frequently

The more frequently you schedule a good pipe cleaning, the less annoying it will be. Instead of cleaning off a year of grim, you’ll only be faced with a few weeks or months. Not only does a clean pipe taste and smell better, but it improves to total smoking experience. You’ll have the opportunity to truly appreciate the strain of weed you smoke, instead of just tasting the nasty rotten resin. You’ll thank us once you experience the difference.
